Bassinet, Co-sleeper, and Facts about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

How to protect your newborn from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)? that question is asked so often and discussed with pediatricians.
Approximately one or two newborns out of every one thousand die in their sleep, for no apparent reason, between the fourth and sixteenth weeks of life.
SIDS or crib death occurs most often in winter among males who had a low birth weight. Those babies usually were well cared for and showed no obvious symptoms of illness.
Positioning for sleep is very important. Back is the safest position, not stomach, like parents thought earlier. The stomach-positioned infant gets less oxygen and eliminates less carbon dioxide.
It is also important to avoid placing your baby down for sleep on soft, porous surfaces such pillows or quilts. Her airway may become blocked if her face becomes burrowed in such surfaces. A firm bassinet or crib mattress covered by a sheet is the safest bedding, that you put your little one on.
The other thing, that you may consider is to put your infant in a co-sleeper, next to your bed. It is very convenient for you to check on the baby during the night, baby also feels safer being next to you.
Co-sleepers are very new things and they deserve our attention, because of their endless benefits for you and the baby.

If you use a co-sleeper, please share with your comments.
